Photoshop: Non-Destructive and FlexibleTechniques

As a Photoshop user, you should strive to create make want ever you do be non-destructive.  There are several techniques that can assist you in this endeavor. However, you should also strive to make what you are doing flexible. For example, while using CTRL+J can be used to copy a selection to another layer and then special effect (f/x) can be added to it. It is better to use a layer mask so that you can make any changes readily.
